Home » Food Storage, Recipes » Make your own instant oatmeal

Instant oatmeal is a great thing to have in your food cache.  It is nutritious and can be vacuum sealed and packed away, and you just add hot water to make it, or even cold water if you have no means of heating it up.  You can buy instant oatmeal packets, but you can cut the cost even further by making it yourself.

4-1/2 cups quick cooking rolled oats
1-1/2 cups milk powder
3/4 cups wheat germ
1/3 cups brown sugar
3 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt

First, blend 1-1/2 cups of the rolled oats in a blender until fine.  Next, spread the remaining rolled oats on a cookie sheet, and bake them in the oven at 375F for 5-10 minutes or until lightly browned, stirring  a couple of times.  Allow to cool.  Combine all remaining ingredients together and seal in ziploc bags or vacuum seal.  Makes 12 servings, in 1/2 cup servings, which you can either do individually or as a large batch.

You can also add other ingredients such as finely chopped dried apple or other fruit.

To make, take one serving – 1/2 cup of mixture – and combine with 1/2 cup boiling water.  Stir while it thickens, and you can add additional water until it is the desired consistency.
